A veteran stand-up performer, he got his start at the hungry i in San Francisco and various other clubs, then landed a starring role in the 1960s action show I Spy. He later starred in his own sitcom, The Bill Cosby Show. He was one of the major performers on the children's television series The Electric Company during its first two seasons, and created the educational cartoon comedy series Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, about a group of young friends growing up in the city. Cosby also acted in a number of films. During the 1980s, Cosby produced and starred in one of the decade's defining sitcoms, The Cosby Show, which aired eight seasons from 1984 to 1992. It was the number one show in America for five straight years (1985–89).[1] The sitcom highlighted the experiences and growth of an affluent African-American family. He also produced the spin-off sitcom A Different World, which became second to The Cosby Show in ratings. He starred in the sitcom Cosby from 1996 to 2000 and hosted Kids Say the Darndest Things for two seasons. Several women have accused Cosby of drugging and/or sexually assaulting them. None of the accusations have been tested in court and Cosby has repeatedly denied the claims.[45] On January 28, 2000, Lachele Covington alleged in a police report filed on February 1 that Cosby groped her in his apartment.[46][47][48] In January 2004, Andrea Constand, a former Temple University employee, accused him of drugging and fondling her. In February 2005, authorities announced they would not charge Cosby over the allegations because of "insufficient credible and admissible evidence," Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce Castor said in a statement in February 2005.[49] Constand filed a civil claim against Cosby in March of that year[50] and thirteen women came forward with similar allegations, agreeing to testify as witnesses when the case went to court.[51] Cosby settled out of court for an undisclosed amount in November 2006.[50] On hearing that the prosecutor was unlikely to pursue charges in relation to Andrea Constand's accusation, in February 2005, California lawyer Tamara Lucier Green came forward with allegations that Cosby had drugged and assaulted her in 1969.[52][53] Cosby's lawyer said that Cosby did not know the accuser and that she had described events that did not happen.[54] In a July 2005 interview with the Philadelphia Daily News, Beth Ferrier alleged that in 1984, Cosby drugged her coffee, she felt woozy, passed out and woke up with her clothes partially removed.[55][56] Barbara Bowman,[51] journalist Joan Tarshis[57], model Janice Dickinson[58] and others have similarly alleged Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted them.[59] Cosby's attorney stated one account differed from prior accounts from the same person.[60] He also released a statement on the comic's website that said in part: "Mr. Cosby does not intend to dignify these allegations with any comment."
