7 Mississippi Prison guards assaulted by Inmates
The Mississippi Department of Corrections says seven correctional officers at the South Mississippi Correctional Institution in Leakesville were assaulted following a shakedown at the prison.
State officials say all of the officers were treated and released from a nearby hospital.
The corrections department said five inmates have been identified as being among the attackers, and were moved to another prison. They say the investigation continues, and all inmates involved in the assault will face charges.
Corrections Commissioner Christopher B. Epps tells The Clarion-Ledger (http://on.thec-l.com/1ugCVKj ) they are not sure what provoked the inmates to assault the officers.
The disturbance occurred around 1:30 p.m. Monday in a unit that houses 193 inmates.
Epps says a corrections officer was assaulted at the prison last week and he remains hospitalized.
